Who We Are
For more than one hundred and twenty-five years, First Baptist Church has sought to meet the spiritual needs of Mertens and the surrounding communities by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With our affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and the Texas Baptist General Convention (BGCT) our church has a wide variety of ministries and programs to share the Gospel of Christ Jesus both locally and across the world.
Our Story
First Baptist Church of Mertens, Texas was founded in June of 1884. Since her founding, FBC Mertens, has sought to faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and serve her community in various ways. We are a church filled with hardworking people who desire to worship Christ, serve one another, and fulfill the Great Commission given to us by King Jesus. We are committed to expositional preaching and believe that the Bible is sufficient for all of life and godliness.
Our Foundations
Christ is Our Head: Jesus is who we look to, listen to, and seek to make much of. (Colossians 1:15-20)
The Bible is Our Authority: The Scripture is our sole authority for all that we do as a body of believers. (2 Timothy 3:16-4:2)
The Gospel is Our Message: We seek to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection to all people. (Romans 1:15-17)
Making Disciples is Our Mission: We seek to fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples locally in our homes, church, community, and of the nations. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Biblical Worship is Our Heartbeat: Our worship is regulated by Scripture as we seek to worship God as He has prescribed to His people in His word. (Hebrews 10:19-25)
Biblical Families are Our Core: We believe that the family is the center of God’s created order and hence we seek to organize our families in a way that conforms to Scripture alone. (Ephesians 5:15-6:9)
What is the mission of the church?
MISSON: We exist to glorify God and love others by proclaiming the Gospel and making disciples.
We are committed to glorifying God in all things that we do. With Christ as our Head we strive to align our ministries, worship, discipleship, and evangelism with Scripture so that God alone may receive all glory.
We are committed to loving others in our community and abroad by Gospel proclamation and discipleship. The Gospel is the good news that Jesus came to ransom for himself a people (by his virgin birth, perfect life, substitutionary death, literal resurrection, and glorious ascension) and that one day he will return and judge the world and renew all things to himself. We absolutely believe that the Gospel is the power of God for salvation, where God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, and is sufficient. (Rom. 1:16-17)
We are mission-focused, which means we are seeking to glorify God as we make, mature, and multiply disciples of Jesus. Though there are many honorable things that the church is called to, we believe that our primary calling and mission is making disciples that make disciples, and to that end we are focused.
